Carry On Up the Jungle is just one of a handful of Carry-on Films that does not star Kenneth Williams, probably due to the reason that he was busy making a Radio Show at the time. The movie does however have Frankie Howard in his role, playing Inigo Tinkle leader of a rare bird watching society. Professor Tinkle takes his group of followers to Africa in search of the mythical Oozulum. The group in turn find far more than they had ever bargained for!
This was Kenneth Connor’s first appearance in the series after a long absence and he does a pretty good job here, playing the usual bashful, accident prone character, consistent with most of his other roles in the series. The funniest star of this Carry-on for me, by far, is Terry Scott who’s plays Tarzan, who falls in love with one of Professor Tinkles assistants June (Jacki Piper). Scott is hilarious and this is by far his best ever acting performance in my opinion. There is a pretty good sub-plot which is basically a mickey take of The Omega Man, there is one funny twist involving a character which I personally did not see coming, it’s just a pity the rest of the film couldn’t live up to that quality. Up the Jungle is no-where near the level of hilarity of Up the Kyber for example, but is considerably better than some of the later films for sure.
6/10 – Calum Roberts.
