The 18th Carry On film produced by Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas is loosely the only sequel in the entire series, although that is based more on the movies title, rather than the script. The production is set in the same hospital location as Carry on Doctor, all of the lead actors who appeared in the first film play totally different characters in the so-called sequel, quite bizarre really when you think about it.
Anyhow, the plot follows Dr Nooky (Jim Dale), who inadvertently keeps upsetting an antagonistic elderly patient, Miss Armitage (Ann Lancaster) who also happens to have influence with the Board of the Hospital. This all leads to Dr Nooky becoming very unpopular with his colleagues, including Dr Stoppage (Charles Hawtry), and his boss Dr Cleaver (Kenneth Williams). Eventually Nooky is fired and he is sent as a Medical Missionary to the remote Beatific Islands and a clinic owned by the wealthy and eccentric Mrs Moore (Joan Sims). On the Island Dr Nookey meets the Local Medicine Man Gladstone Screwer (Sid James), who has discovered a remarkable weight loss serum, which Dr Nookey brings back to England. The normal Carry On chaos then ensures ending in a farce with Dr Stoppage in drag receiving the weight loss serum by mistake. Eventually Nooky gets his own his back on Cleaver, as they say revenge is a dish best served cold. The last scene is somewhat expected.
Although there are some very creative and good ideas in this movie, the film is a bit of a-let-down if you watch it straight after Carry On Doctor. It isn’t dreadful, but it is much pretty laugh-free, which isn’t what you would expect from a comedy.
